De Vroomen revitalised the art of repoussé. This is a technique he uses to create flowing sculptural forms avoiding excessive weight, and fully exploiting the supreme malleability of gold.
It involves the shaping of sheet metal with hammer and punch whilst it is being supported on a bed of pitch. The pitch holds the metal in place and being softer than the gold it allows the metal to be formed.
Many, many thousands of hammer blows during hours of devoted work are needed to make the bangle illustrated here.
Leo de Vroomen is the Master Goldsmith.
